We are delighted to announce that John Laird, one of our growers, and his wife Cameron have scooped a prestigious “Rural Oscar”, winning the Scottish Countryside Alliance (SCA) Best Rural Enterprise Award for their ongoing diversification into new and exciting visitor attractions. Cairnie Fruit Farm, hosts the infamous Cairnie Mega Maze and a variety of other attractions, which bring thousands of people to their rural area every year, creating and maintaining employment within the farm.
The prestigious award ceremony took place on the 8th of February at Holyrood. The awards were presented by the Enterprise Minister, Fergus Ewing, across a range of categories to rural businesses and enterprise, nominated by their customers and local communities. Other MP’s including Murdo Fraser and of course, First Minister Alex Salmond, were among the guests.
John said they were shocked and delighted to even be short listed and to win was “completely unexpected” but they are over the moon with the news! Other finalists in the Rural Enterprise category, were Leadburn Manor and Spencerfield Spirit, who John acknowledged were both very stiff competition and deserving of the award. The icing on the cake for the Laird’s is that they will be going on to represent Scotland against businesses from England, Wales and Ireland at the Countryside Alliance Grand Awards competition in the House of Lords on the 7th of March.
Well done to John and Cam and good luck in March!!
